Material success and failure go together like day and night. Therefore you should understand than whenever there is success it will soon be followed by failure and that whenever there is failure it will soon be followed by success. If you allow yourself to be elated by success, you are sure to become depressed by failure. The simple solution is to be equipoised, equal both in success and failure seeing them both as the mercy of Krishna and both to be engaged in His service. Krishna describes such an equipoised vision as follows in the Bhagavad-gita: bāhya-sparśeṣv asaktātmā “A person who neither rejoices upon achieving something pleasant nor laments upon obtaining something unpleasant, who is self-intelligent, who is unbewildered, and who knows the science of God, is already situated in transcendence. Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme.” Sankarshan Das Adhikari |

Man believes that it is very essential to keep his mind under control. If mind is not engaged than nothing can happen. What is the point in reciting God’s name, what is the benefit of it ?
Mind is simply not engaged. If only the mind would be engaged then all would be OK – this is the understanding. But the engagement of the mind, or not, is not that important. It is the attachment, the attractions, the affinity and fondness that we have for the world, that is the main cause.
Even if the mind is engaged, we may attain certain level of understanding, but as long as, there is attraction for the world, salvation or spiritual upliftment will not take place.
When attachment and aversion is removed, then the cycle of birth and death will leave us. There will not be any sorrow; because it is attachment and aversion alone that is the cause of all our sorrows.
The attachment that we have to objects, enjoyments, individuals, things, situations, the pull of the mind towards them, the fondness, that is the main flaw. The agitations of the mind are not that much of a problem. They too contribute to the problem, but people have considered the mind and it’s agitations alone to be the main cause. But in reality, the culprit is attachment, attraction and fondness.
For a spiritual aspirant it is essential to understand this, that it is only this deep fondness that is the cause of birth and death cycle.
It is the association with gunas (qualities). Our attention is simply not on the attraction and fondness that we have, but rather it is on the agitations of the mind.
The main thing to keep in mind is that in reality it is the fondness and attraction that we are experiencing that will lead to bondage, not the agitations of the mind. The agitations are wiped out when we feel sleepy, but the attachment to the things remain and
one goes to sleep carrying with him his attachments and attractions.
I am very astonished as to why people do not leave attachments !
WE love money ! For name and fame, you are willing to spend several thousand rupees, but the attachment that you have for the money cannot be spent away. How has money wronged you? The attraction and attachment that you have for money needs to be removed.
People’s attention is not on this point. Therefore please be attentive to this point. This is attachment. The importance of this has been established and rooted within. Inspite of doing satsang for years, engaging in self inquiry, even these men they do not realize the reason behind their useless activities. In dealing with people, in spiritual matters, in food and drinks, in giving and taking, in all situations, attachment is a major obstacle. If this goes away then your relating with people and the world at large will become very easy and simple.
