“Sanskrit: लक्ष्मण रेखा), in Hindu mythology, is a line drawn by Lakshmana around their abode, to protect Sita, while he is away searching for Rama. As explained in the epic Ramayana, Rama goes chasing a golden deer, which is actually the demon Maricha in disguise, and does not return for long.

When Sita coerces Lakshmana to leave in search of his brother, Lakshmana who cannot bear to see Sita cry in grief, decides to go and search for Rama, subject to his condition that Sita should not cross the line he draws, so that she would be protected in his absence. Anybody attempting to harm Sita across the line would be singed by flames erupting from the line.

Once Lakshmana leaves in search of Rama, the Rakshasa king Ravana comes in the form of a sage and asks Sita for alms. Not expecting a trick, she unsuspectingly crosses the Lakshman Rekha to provide alms to him and Ravana kidnaps her in his Pushpaka Vimana.

Shri Ramacharitamanas, the popular rendering of story of Shri Rama does not feature the Lakshmana Rekha in the Aranya Kanda. However in Lanka Kanda Mandodari rebukes Ravan on his boisterous claims of valour by hinting that his claim of strength and valour is shallow for he could not even cross a small line drawn by Shri Rama’s younger brother Lakshmana.

Radhey Shyam Ramayan mentions that the crossing of Lakshaman Rekha by Sita was done absent-mindedly by an anxious Sita only to honour the great Indian tradition of “अतिथि देवो भवः” (Atithi Devo Bhava): the guest is embodiment of a Deva (God). Sita crosses the boundary line only to give alms to Ravana once he insists that alms cannot be accepted across a barrier as having a boundary in between was against the principle of free will of the donor.

AT THIS PLACE, The younger brother of Lord Shri Rama had drawn rekha called LAXMAN REKHA

::  D O H A  ::

Having cleansed the mirror of my soul with the dust of the guru’s lotus-feet, I describe Raghuvara’s spotless glory, the bestower of life’s four fruits. Realizing that I am void of all wisdom, I meditate on the son of the Wind, may he bless me with strength, wisdom and knowledge and rid me of my sufferings and sins.

                  ::  H A N U M A N   C H A L I S A  ::

Glory to you, O Hanuman, ocean of all knowledge and virtue! Glory to the Monkey lord, enlightener of the triple worlds; you are Rama’s envoy of might incomparable Anjani’s son called Pavansuta.

You are mighty, valiant, radiant as the thunderbolt, banisher of wickedness, of the wise befriender, golden-hued and brilliant and charmingly bedecked, with pendants sparkling in your ears and curly hair on the head.

In your hands flash the thunderbolt and banner and across your shoulder the sacred thread of munja. O Shankara’s son, the delight of Keshari, the greatness of your glory is adored all the world over.

Learned, accomplished and exceedingly wise, ever eager to carry out Rama’s behest you delight in listening to the Lord’s ambrosial acts, with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita dwelling in your heart.

You appeared before Sita in a subtle form, burnt Lanka in a form awesome to behold; you slew the demons by assuming a gigantic form and thus accomplished Rama’s mission.

You brought the life-giving herb, which resuscitated Lakshmana; joyously then Rama clasped you to his bosom and praised you again and again. ‘You are as dear to me as Brahma’ he said.

The thousand-headed Serpent hymns your glory! So saying, Sita’s lord fondly embraces you. ‘So also Sanaka, his brothers, Brahma and the other high sages, Narada, Sarada and the Serpent king’.

Yama, Kubera and all the guardians of the directions, poets and scholars cannot sing your glory. You rendered great service to Sugriva when you brought him to Rama, who crowned him king and gave him sovereignty over Kishkindhaa.

Vibhishana heeded your advice and became Lanka’s lord, which the whole world knows. Considering him to be a sweet fruit, you swallowed the sun from a distance of two thousand yojnas.

No wonder you leapt across the ocean, carrying the Lord’s ring in your mouth. All the tasks of the world, however difficult are rendered easily possible by your favour.

You are the sentinel posted at Rama’s gate which none can enter unless you let him in. He who seeks refuge in you enjoys all blessings and with you as protector experiences no fear.

When you remember your blazing splendour (which you alone control) and roar aloud, your thunderous voice causes tremor in the three spheres; when your name Mahavira is incessantly repeated, ghosts and goblins dare not make their visitation

Constant repetition of your name, O valiant Hanuman, destroys all illness and dispels all suffering. If one meditates on you with thought, word and deed, you rid one of every calamity.

Though Rama himself is a supreme ascetic, Lord of all, yet you, Hanuman, fulfilled all his missions successfully. Whoever expresses a longing to you is rewarded with countless fruits of life.

Your glory is famed through all the four ages, shedding its lustre on the terrestrial sphere. You are the protector of every saint and sage, destroyer of the demons and Rama’s pet.

Be thou the bestower of the eight siddhis and the nine nidhis such is the boon Mother Janaki bestowed on you. You possess Rama-the philosopher’s stone-and Raghupati’s servant you ever remain.

By hymning your praises the aspirant attains Rama and forgets the sufferings of all transmigratory births. At last your votary goes to the city of Raghuvara, where taking birth, he is called Hari’s devotee.

He who does not cherish any other god but serves only Hanuman enjoys all bliss. If one constantly repeats the valiant Hanuman’s name, al calamities disappear and all sufferings end.

Glory, glory, all glory to the Lord Hanuman! Be gracious to me like my own guru. He who recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and enjoys supreme bliss.

He who reads this Hanumanchalisa attains perfection, to which the Lord Shiva testifies. Says Tulasi, ‘O Lord, make my heart your dwelling-place, you who are forever in Rama’s service.’

::  D O H A  ::

O Son of the wind, dispeller of all calamities, the very embodiment of all blessings! O king of the immortals, dwell in my heart with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.

Sant Tulsidasji and Ashwinbhai Pathak of Amadavad.

By not mis-utilizing things with our intellect, thoughts, abilities, and instead utilizing them properly, the relationship formed with those things is wiped out. Also by serving without a selfish motive, the assumed relationship with the individual (person) is wiped out. When this relationship is wiped out, one attains freedom. Here there is a doubt, that when worldly relationships are discontinued, severed, then why are these great liberated souls, still engaged in serving others? Here the understanding is that it has become their nature as a result of their spiritual state, to see to the well-being and benefit of all beings – “Sarva bhootehite rataah.” (Gita 5:25, Gita 12:4) Therefore even though there is nothing of importance remaining to do, to know and to acquire, yet their nature remains to do what is beneficial to all – “Swabhaavstu pravartateh” (Gita 5:14). Lord declares – “Even a liberated man acts according to his own nature.” (Gita 3:33) . It means that by remaining engrossed in the welfare of others, their affinity for the world is completely detached; and therefore do not have to make an effort to work for the welfare of others, rather the welfare of others becomes a spontaneous activity. It becomes second nature to do that which is for the well-being of others.

Except God whatever we regard as ours becomes polluted because it is the sense of “mineness” which is filth (pollution) – “Let the filth of mineness be burnt” (Manasa 7/117a). Not only this but by regarding the persons as our own, we want to become their master but in fact we become their slaves. We want to set them right but in fact they are set wrong. By doing so we defile our body, sense, mind, intellect, ego, wife, sons, family, riches and property etc., and create an obstacle to their improvement. But if we don’t regard them as ours they are purified by God’s power and become a unique gift of God because in reality they belong only to God.

If we regard an object as ours, it becomes polluted and we become orphans and slaves. But if we don’t regards it as ours, it is purified and liberated.

Sustainance of Life is Independent on Effort and Possessions – Gita 16:11

“Obsessed lifelong with innumerable cares that end only with death, steeped in the gratification of desires and accumulation of wealth as the highest aim, and
Convinced that, that is the end-all.” (Gita 16:11)

Those individuals with demoniac tendencies are beset with innumerable cares, worries and anxieties till they die. There is no end to their worries. The end outcome for people who worry is the endless cycle of birth and death.

Worries are two types – the spiritual and the mundane. Those who are concerned about their salvation, think about how can they attain God Realization, Self Realization? How can they become firmly establish in the aim of attaining that Ultimate and Supreme Consciousness? These individuals with spiritual concerns are noble. But people possessing a demonaic nature, are not beset with spiritual worries. They are obsessed with worldly cares and worries,
as to how they can get honor, praise, fame, and prestige? How can they live long? What would happen to their family, wealth and property after their death and so on? Without money, how will they sustain? Without money, how will the maintenance of their home and household carry on? Etc.

But the fact is that a man is worried uselessly, and only out of ignorance. The Lord continues to provide the necessities of life to all beings. In fact many things will remain unconsumed, while “call of death” arrives at the doorstep. Even when a dispassionate saint dies, he leaves behind his loin cloth and a pot made of hollowed gourd. Similarly most individuals die leaving behind a number of things. It is expected that when man dies, his wealth and possessions remain behind, being of no avail to him.

There was a very rich man. He builds a house of steel, similar to a safe, and he stored his jewels, precious stones and ornaments there. The house doors could be unlocked only with a key. One day he went into the house and by mistake shut the door, but the key was left outside. Being without food, water and air for number of days, on his death bed he wrote “Inspite of being covered with wealth, gold, silver, precious gems and possessions, I am dying, because I
have no food, water or air.” Inspite of having all material possessions, it is not necessary that one can remain alive. Just like a doctor stops a man who is suffering from a severe stomach disease, from eating many delicious foods to save him from dying. Therefore there is no certainty that on having wealth and possession one will be able to use them.

The dispassionate ascetics who do not possess even a single penny, get the necessities of life and often more than is required, according what is destined for them. Therefore sustainance of life is not dependent on efforts and material possessions. Saint Tulasidas declares, “God first determined the destiny of a being, and then bestowed upon him this human body. “God provides clothes, wood, and fire even for a dead body, so if a living man worries about his livelihood, he is very unfortunate.” Saint Ramdas also declares, “An ascetic possesses neither food nor cattle (for milk) nor any money, but at meal-time, he receives the needful.”

However, those with demoniac nature, do not understand this. They think that they get things due to their worries, their desires, their thinking and planning and then putting the necessary effort and if they do not do so, they will die of starvation.

Understanding this, let us not worry and let us devote our self to worship and adoration of God.

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He’s very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant’s confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Now, the merchant’s 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, “Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I’ll be alone. How lonely I’ll be!”

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, “I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?” “No way!” replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.

The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant’s heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, “I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?” “No!” replied the 3rd wife. “Life is so good over here! I’m going to remarry when you die!” The merchant’s heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, “I always turned to you for help and you’ve always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?” “I’m sorry, I can’t help you out this time!” replied the 2nd wife. “At the very most, I can only send you to your grave.” The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.

Then a voice called out : “I’ll leave with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go.” The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, “I should have taken much better care of you while I could have !”

Actually, we all have 4 wives in this life!

a. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die.
b. Our 3rd wife ? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.
c. The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.
d. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.

Guess what?

It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it’s a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we’re on our deathbed to lament

How to attain love ? If you want to attain love, love all of mankind. All beings. Do not cause distress or trouble or difficulty or pain or sorrow to any one at all. “Sarve bhavantu sukhinah”. Let all beings be happy. Let all be elevated spiritually. Let all be free of diseases. Let no one ever experience any pain and suffering. Let all be liberated. As long as there is selfishness, as long as there is desire to have our own wishes fulfilled, then these will remain as selfish desires. Let us therefore wish well for others and let us love all. Without loving all, there cannot be love for God (Bhagwaan). This is the truth. Therefore love all. See to the welfare of all. Serve all. Remember – “Sarve bhantu sukhinah”

This is the greatness of saints. They only do that which is beneficial to all. To attain this love, love all. It is very important for householders. For everyone living in the same household, live in harmony. If everyday, there is misery, there is crying, there is selfishness, there is no discord, how can there ever be love? So, how to increase that love?

Those that are in your household, start with them. Start by doing “pranaam” to all that are older to you in your household, both morning and night. Men can do the same to the older men. See this act as making God (Bhagwaan) happy. God is happy by your sentiments. Do the same to all those that you see throughout the day. Whoever is there, try to see God in them. Accept that there is God in them. If you feel embarrassed to do pranaam, then just do it mentally. If God is present in all, then one who wants to realize God (Paramatma) will be unable to stay away from doing “namaskaar”. Simply do it mentally to all those that you meet. Namaskaar is with 8 parts – Feet, knees, hands, heart, head, eyes, speech and mind. Do namaskaar with all these eight. Ashtaang namaskaar. Harer Namah. Do it with speech, eyes and heart if you cannot do all eight. It is said in Srimad Bhagwat (10 skand, 14 adhyaa) “tatye nu kampaan..” Continue to see to his kripaa (grace). Simply hold on to this point in your heart. He has given this human body, this satsang, the scriptures, the holy places, see His grace in all this. He who continues to do namaskar (obeisance), becomes entitled to liberation. Therefore start doing this with members of your family. Do it morning and evening, then all fights in the household will end. If there are fights then you will not be able to do “namaskaar”.

Namaskaar means no matter what, I am surrendered to you. Now whatever you do is up to you. By doing this, all your karmas will come to an end. Even if one time you do namaskar to Bhagwaan Krishna, then the benefits will be enormous. It is such an easy point. If anyone wants to sincerely know about love, then this point will appear like nectar. Bhagwaan has come, in all these bodies (forms). They are all temples of God. “Ishvar sarva bhootaanaam, hrdye…”. All modifications of the mind will end. All hatred will end. All flaws that you see in others will come to an end. Pride will come to an end. It is so very easy!! Try to do this and see for yourself. At least you should rationally think whether there is anything to loose from doing this? No loss of money, no loss of time, no loss of anything!! But the gains are phenomenal. Therefore simply do it. Ask the children to do the same. Teach them to do so, then simply by doing this, even any third person who sees this will be happy. All will gain. All will benefit. Get up in the morning and do so and do the same in the evening as well. You will see the magic of love.
