Question: We do spiritual practices, do worship and rememberance of God (Bhajans) and associate with holy company and Truths (satsang), then too we are influenced by worldly impressions? Why is that?
Answer: See Brother! I am going to saying something. Pay close attention to it. Who is being influenced by the world? Think over this seriously. The World is affected by the world, but the Self is not affected. The Self remains the same. Moreover the effect is short-lived and transitory. But who has this knowledge? The Self has this knowledge, doesn’t it? Can you answer that?
Question: The point that comes to mind is that when we are here in satsang, at that time we are convinced but afterwards it does not remain. So what to do?
Answer: If you are convinced during the discourse but the effect does not remain afterwards, don’t worry. In satsang (association with Truth) it was good and you were convinced, wasn’t it? Then it is an error on your part that you want to look back. Do not withdraw. Correct this right now. There will be effect of the world i.e. you will have the inclinations or tendencies because you can’t have dealings in your practical life without them. How will you eat, speak and walk without them? In solitude you may be free of these tendencies. But most importantly, there is a knower or an onlooker of these tendencies and inclinations. If you understand this point, you will attain eternal joy.
There are two states – One is of action while you are dealing with the world, and another is of inaction, while you have no dealings. But both actions and inaction are inclinations as they have affinity with mind and intellect. But the light by which you see the two inclinations, has no inclinations. You can see the light in solitude, but you cannot see it clearly while you are having dealings in the world. But it does not mean that the light is not there. If that light is not there, then how can you know whether you have inclinations or disinclinations. Be established in the Self. Do not wish to see the inclinations uniform. i.e. Do not wish for the state of repose, as both the states of inclination and disinclination are unreal and transitory, while the Light by which they are seen is real. So remain established in the Light i.e. Self. If you understand this point, you will attain supreme bliss.
I advise you to remain established in that Self, in which you are already established and not to think about the effect, because this effect is not on you (Self) but on your inner faculties (mind, intellect etc.) which are a part of the world. Moreover the effects are transitory. So it is no use to be worried about it.
Sometimes there is inclination and sometimes there is disinclination in the entire world. You work while you are awake, but you don’t work while you are asleep. But does it make any difference in you (Self / Light)? The inclinations and disinclinations of the world and the body are made of the same matter. Therefore why are you worried about them? You say that when you have the effect of the world, you become dissatisfied and uneasy. The reason is that you want to see your inner faculties (mind, intellect) as uniform. Don’t wish to see it uniform. It cannot remain uniform, because changes / alternations is the activity of Matter (Prakriti).
