WHAT IS SATSANG -GOOD COMPANY? * Swami Ramasukhdasji

Shree Hari Ram Ram

To accept Truth is Satsang.

Giving up attachment for the perishable is also Satsang.

By mere listening, Satsang does not happen. Satsang means, establishing a link with Sat (Truth, Real, Eternal, the Imperishable) and giving Sat (Truth) importance.

To love God is “Satsang” and to detach from liking the perishable is also Satsang.

Satsang is not available easily by one’s own efforts, but with the special grace of God.

When there is selfishness, there is no Satsang, but only its opposite.

Just like when there is limited heat in the body (weak digestion), food is not digested, similarly when there is no inner quest for knowing the truth, then the good thoughts (satsang) are not imbibed.

To see in everybody the all-pervasive God is Satsang (the link with Sat).

Satsang is not repeatedly possible just like human birth is not repeatedly possible.

To have opportunity for Satsang, is a sign of a very special divine grace from God.

What is the significance and value of Satsang (Good Company)? And when does one benefit from Satsang?

Just as food is essential to sustain a body, similarly for spiritual life (parmarthic jeev), Satsang is essential.

In business both gains and losses take place, but in Satsang, there is only profit, never a loss.

From satsang (keeping the company of pious people) man gains even more than through spiritual practices and meditation in solitude.

To carry out spiritual practices is like working to earn money, while doing satsang (of holy people), it is like sitting on the lap (being adopted by) of a wealthy person. Just like an adopted person inherits all the wealth of his new parents, similarly, through satsang, even without doing any spiritual practices, these practices (sadhan) happen automatically.

By giving importance to the ideas in Satsang, thoughts are significantly purified and morbid feelings get destroyed.

In satsang (virtuous company), even without effort one is spiritually uplifted, and by kusang (bad company), even without doing anything, he falls.

Without giving up the association of unholy (kusang), there is no obvious gain from Satsang (good company).

Satsang (pious company), good thoughts, holy scriptures and sorrow, all four are able to dissolve the linkage with the world for a discerning person.

Even after years of spiritual practice and self inquiry, the Truth that remains unattainable, it can be realized in no time through Satsang.

KUSANG (Bad Company)

It is kusang (bad company) to accept one’s relationship with the body and the world.

Kusang (Bad company) itself does not harm, but in accepting bad company, it becomes detrimental.

Non-believers in God, the other world and righteousness (Dharma) – company of such atheists is kusang and the cause of the worst downfall in man.

The more attached one is to sense pleasures, the more inertness arises in the intellect, by which even matters of true essence whether read or heard in satsang (pious company), become incomprehensible.

With the desire to gain something from the world, kusang (bad company) begins.

Where there is selfishness, there is no Satsang. There is only Kusang.

When there is inner weakness (faults) in a person, only then there is impact from external kusang (bad company). The reason is, that likes attract and unlikes do not.

Under all circumstances, one learns the art of happiness only through Satsang.

  1. SATSANG according to my understanding is a flow of knowledge (Gyan) from higher level to lower level. Satsang is where some positive energy transpires from one end to another. This flow is possible only when, out of two, one is full of knowledge (Gyani-Enlightened) and other is ignore and also aware about his/her ignorance and ready to accept and ready to be receptive with totality. Satsang is possible between Guru and Shishya. It is not possible between two Gurus. There would not be any flow between two Gurus, as they are on the same level. What we call Satsang is 98% VIVAD (controversial talk or arguments) and hardly is 2% SAMVAD. Because most of the time both are trying to prove him/her self right. You may correct me if you find it wrong.
