The Flow of Spiritual Truths – 2
So far, no one has been able to keep any of the worldly objects related to this body. There have been many great ascetics and they have received many great boons, but none has been able to keep his body. No one is able to keep this body. Then what benefit is there in this false attempt at trying to keep it with you? To attempt to keep holding on to this body, wealth, property, house, family, etc., is like carrying darkness. Can one lift and throw darkness outside? And if somebody goes to look for the darkness with a lamp, then can he find it? Similarly if you attempt to see and know the world then you will get nothing; because this unreal world has no independent existence of its own. It is only due to the real, ever existent, Essence, Element of Paramatma, that the unreal appears as real.
An aspirant should not associate and accept an association with virtues and vices both, then there will be no pride of good qualities, and no sins will remain. The state of the self is free from vices and virtues.
Therefore it is said –
“Sunahun taat maaya krut guna aru dosh anek |
Guna yah ubhay na dekhiahin dekhia so abibek ||
“Gunadoshdarshidosho gunastoobhayavarjitah ||
(Srimad Bhagwat. 11/19/45)
“To have one’s eye on vices and virtue in other words to consider its relation with us is the worst of all sins, and to not have your sight on these and instead to remain established in the Self, that is free of any modifications, is the one of the highest virtues.”
If you see qualities in you, then along with it with certainty will come pride and sins. Because it is only due to flaws that one praises ones qualities and attributes. Just as praising a wealthy person is due to the those that are poor (without any wealth), not due to the wealthy; just like glories an wise person is only due to the ignorant fools, not due to the wise; the orator’s greatness is only due to the listeners, not due to the speakers. Due to small things being present, there is greatness of big things. If small things did not remain then how will one see things as being big?
Worldly enjoyments are like sweets tainted with poison. As long as man does not leave the sweets, till then the poison does not leave man. To be saved from the poison, man will have to give up the sweets. To eat the sweets and at the same time not get poisoned is not possible. If one comes to know that there is poison in the sweets, then though being sweet tasting, no one will eat it. If someone eats it even on knowing there is poison, then it is evident that the poison in the sweets is only something that one has heard about, it has not been recognized, accepted, and acknowledged. It is also said –
Karani bin kathni kathe, agyaani din raat |
Kookar jyon bhoonkat phirai, suni sunaayi baat ||
From “Sadhakon ke Prati” in Hindi pg 7-8 by Swami Ramsukhdasji
