 Buddha Standard Time:

Awakening to the Infinite Possibilities of Now

NEWS

On my recent trip to India, as one of 600 or so invited delegates from around the world (46 countries), I spoke on Buddhism in the West and the Encounter with Modernity at the Global Buddhist Congregation in New Delhi. As we gathered together to celebrate 2,600 years since the Buddha’s enlightenment, I rejoiced in being carried along by the lively ripples of joyful and healing Dharma reaching our Western shores and into our hearts.  Afterwards, some of us continued on by bus for a pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya and Sarnath. In my group bus– dubbed the Russian Bus– the windshield fell out on the first day of rough road during the seven hour drive from Benares to Bodh Gaya–in classic Indian style, we carried on in that manner for five days, inhaling the dusty incense of Buddha’s land. What a great blessing it was to once again sit beneath the Bodhi Tree and visit Vulture’s Peak, Nalanda and Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his early teachings. The more it has changed over the last forty one years, since my first visit, the more the inner essence and depth remains the same. Amazing!

This marvelous excursion further strengthened the core of my personal commitment, action and life’s work:  to help the Dharma spread ecumenically, openly and inclusively, for it to be more accessible and effective for all, and to further recognition of the deep interconnectedness that unites us all…Keeping two feet firmly planted in the old world tradition and two in the new! Ever since I began teaching in America over 20 years ago with Nyoshul Khenpo Rinpoche, my goal has been to bring to regular people; people just like you and me, the joy, inspiration and eye-opening insight that my enlightened masters freely offered us.

All of us, together, are creating this new Buddhism and liberating Dharma – for a new culture, in a new land, for these times and circumstances. For me, there is nothing else to do but to strike at the heart of the matter: to continue to transmit the View, Meditation and Bodhisattva-Action of the Great Perfection and to work single-mindedly to heal the sufferings of all beings with the transformative elixir of awakening.  I have said it before, in many ways: My Mission is Transmission:  Transmission of the Natural Great Perfection and the innate Buddha within.  Passing this on to you continues to be the guiding light and force in my life–more so than ever as I approach my 62nd year. Let’s continue to travel the path together, one mind and heart, with joined hands and energy.

I wish you and yours a greatly auspicious and fulfilling, happy new year.

With love and prayers,

Lama Surya Das
