Zakir Hussain compte parmi les plus illustres musiciens d’Inde. Fils et élève du grand joueur de tablâ Alla Rakha, il monte sur scène dés ses 12 ans, au milieu des années 1960. Dans les années 1970, il se joint à l’aventurier John McLaughlin au sein du groupe de fusion world-jazz-rock Shakti, et participe à d’autres projets trans-culturels de renom : Ancient Future ou Bustan Abraham. Mais s’il a œuvré à exporté et mélanger les percussions indiennes à d’autres genres, il a aussi largement travaillé au sein de sa scène d’appartenance, au cotés notamment de Ravi Shankar, ou Hariprasa Chaurasia. Titulaire d’une pléthorique discographie, et d’une liste de concerts époustouflante, Zakir reste un personnage scénique généreux qui prône la capacité à l’improvisation comme une ressource essentielle de la musique indienne.
