Dharma is that which upholds…

“In every age I am born
To deliver the holy
And to destroy the sin of the sinner
For the fulfillment
Of the kingdom of righteousness.”

Sri Aurobindo:

“There are two aspects of the divine birth. One is a descent, the birth of God into humanity, God manifesting in the human form, the eternal Avatar. The other is an ascent, the new birth of the human being into God, rising into the divine nature and divine consciousness (Madbhavam Agathah). It is this new birth which the Avatar and the upholding of the Dharma are intended to serve. The divine birth of the Avatar is the soul born into the body, standing above, not entangled and helplessly driven round and round in the mechanism, working in the bright light of wisdom and not, as most do, in the cloud of ignorance. The Avatar is a direct manifestation in humanity by Krishna the eternal soul, the divine condition of being to which Arjuna, the human soul, is called upon by the Teacher to arise, and to which he can only arise by climbing out of the ignorance and limitation of his ordinary humanity. Krishna is the manifestation from above of that which we have to develop from below.”

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi:

“Dharma is that which upholds or sustains all that is. What is this that sustains creation? The ancient Indian exponents of Ayurveda, science of health, hold that it is the equilibrium of the three Gunas…Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas…that sustains all things. Creation gains in stability with the rise of Sattva and falls into disintegration with the rise of Tamas. Whenever Dharma is in decay, the balance of the three Gunas is disturbed, the equilibrium in nature is lost, the path of evolution is distorted and chaos prevails. At such special times the Lord incarnates.

Life has two phases, relative and absolute. The eternally ever-changing nature of relative life is maintained in all its aspects of creation and evolution by virtue of the enormous power in nature called Dharma, which is at the basis of the smooth functioning of the three Gunas. It is like a powerful current which forcibly carries with it all that comes in its path. Dharma upholds creation. But when as a result of the wrongdoing of many people on Earth, the power of Dharma becomes overshadowed, the natural force of evolution in nature becomes weak. A situation is created whereby the ever-changing world of relative existence begins to lose its natural pattern. Incarnation comes, the whole of nature rejoices in that coming, Dharma is restored, and evil gives up its reign.”

Baba Hari Dass:

“Benevolent God,
For the sake of your devotees,
You assume the form
Of a human being
Whenever there is a decline of virtues
And an incline of vice.
I long for your appearance
Now that the whole world
Is merged in violence,
Greed, and power struggles.
Only by your assuming human form
Does the world
Have a chance
To survive.”
