why is there rebirth?

Q: Ma, why is there rebirth? To be saved from this coming and going, this endless cycle, what is the remedy?

Ma: “This is all God’s play (lila) and God’s ordinance. If you leave this world with longing and desires, then you receive a “return ticket” and you have to return to enjoy or suffer these desires. And if you walk the Path to God, then God says, “You will find Me!” Through God’s imagination the world was created so all the actions and events in this world are first just thoughts, which become vasanas (desires).  ‘Vasana’ means ‘Vishya’ (where God does not reside). When the soul becomes enchanted with sensual pleasures, it acts as a slow poison, producing a slow, sometimes imperceptible death. If desires remains, birth and death remain. If by great good fortune and grace the thoughts come to one’s mind: “Who am I? Where have I come from? Who has created me? Who is God? Where and how is He?” then there is hope for recovery and release. Then the Path to Realization begins to open; and Realization of the Self means the Realization of God. For that you first need the guidance of a qualified Guru. The Guru will tell you of God’s Reality. He will bestow power. What he gives is his great grace; God’s grace; the grace of the Divine Mother. But this does not happen without one’s own grace. This is self-grace which one should bestow on oneself. Self grace means fully accepting the Guru’s words, and taking the method given, moving forward on the appointed Path. By a disciplined life, the path to God Realization opens. Through the mantra that the Guru gives, you are reborn, made anew. The new life that follows has to be built by  a combination of your effort and the Guru’s grace, but by having discipline, one gets into the “fast lane” going toward the Divine!

The discipline that you are doing, the japa, the meditation, the spiritual company; all that is happening to you; this is not futile! You will benefit by the amount that you exert. As a stone is worn away by drop after drop of water falling on it, so all the knots will be untied and you will receive deliverance. Be assured of this. Namo Narayan!”
